THE KINGDOMS
Before is a brief description of each kingdom. And if you scroll down, you will find a more in-depth description of each kingdom. We ask you to remember that these kingdom descriptions are by no means comprehensive, but are designed to give you an overview and general sense of what life is like in each of them.

PLEASE NOTE For those of who wanting to create characters outside the norm or against the laws and attitudes of a certain kingdom, we ask you to go ahead with your plan, however, we ask that your characters of getting around their kingdom's laws and social expectations is explained in their application. For example, if you want to create a female dragonrider for Sgaithte, even though it is against their laws, we encourage you to do so, but we ask that you explain how she gets away with it.

MAP Here's a map for reference. It is still a work in progress, but at least you can get a basic idea for the general layout of the world.

Happy reading!

EACHARNACH
A northern kingdom with a horse-based culture. Their terrain is mostly steppes with scattered forests. Their borders are marked by the River Deamharruin and the sea on the northern side. Eacharnach is not focused on military nation, but they do train and keep a standing cavalry. They don't need much military strength due to their natural boundaries and their strong alliance with Foirfich. Eacharnach is a art-based nation and they take pride in beautiful cities, great literature and scientific developments made by their people. Once a year, they hold a games festival, to which every kingdom is invited. Their culture is moderately socially liberal and magic is not only practiced, but encouraged.

FOIRFICH
A powerful militaristic kingdom set on the planes in the Central Region. This nation does not care for beauty or individual expression as much as they care about results. They are a conservative culture, despite their alliance with Eacharnach. Magic is strictly regulated and only licensed practitioners may use it for the good of the state. No one is permitted to be idle in Foirfich. Everyone must have an occupation for the good of the government and the glory of the king. Their cities are industrialized, their land farmed for food and their barren ground used for war games.

GAOTHAIDH
A northeast mountainous nation. The Gaothaidh people are known for being the most scientifically-advanced people anywhere in the world. They are known for blending magic and science together and have discovered the power of steam. Their most famous discovery to date are their air-ships that sail through the skies, as well as their abilities to attach mechanicle wings to individuals. Although they are not a predominantly militaristic state, every other nation, is secretly threatened by them. They are moderately socially-liberal and magic is openly practiced and encouraged.

SGAITHTE
This southern kingdom is a land of rock, volcanoes and fire and dragons. The people here have learned to tame and communicate the beasts. They are a warrior-state and they feel particularly threatened by Gaothaidh. Indeed, things have been tense between the two air-nations for over fifteen years. Sgaithte is a proud, rigid nation iron-cast in traditional and is socially conservative. Magic practitioners must have a license in order to practice.

TEUMNACH
A peaceful subcontinent in the west, sanctioned off from the rest of the world by the River Deamharruin. This is the land there the faeries are carefree and laugh with their stolen children. Magic is so common here that the air buzzes with it. Teumnach is a beautiful place, filled with forests, hills and mountains and it is fed by a distributary from the River Deamharruin, called the Deamhnaidh. Although Teumnach never practices war, they are never bothered by their neighbors, for fear of their magic. Slavery is not permitted in Teumnach.

RIASGLACH
The southern-most kingdom used to be a convict colony until recently, when the wall was disenchanted and the guards dispersed. Now, the ex-convicts live in relative freedom while potential leaders arise. They are socially chaotic.

MUIREACH
An eastern nation connected closely with nautical life. They are the ones who sail out across the seas, searching for other worlds. They find them, too, and bring back exotic goods from faraway lands. They are also responsible, for the sea-pirate population. They are moderately socially conservative.

EACHARNACH
Kingdom of Horselords

user posted image

THE BASICS:

CAPITOL CITY: Freumhach

CURRENT MONARCH: King Pandion Alexander

NATIONAL CREST: A white horse with a green mane, tail and hooves

ECONOMIC STATUS: stable, but indebted to every other kingdom, and mostly to Foirfich

NATIONALLY SEEN AS: The rest of Speirling generalizes Eacharnachians as Barbie doll bimbos who are shallow and ditzy, but beautiful and talented.

CLIMATE: The most Northerly of the kingdoms, Eacharnach is a winter wonderland, covered with snow and ice. During the fall and spring, it is chilly, but things do grow. During the summer, Eacharnach is a pleasant wonderland of green and flowers. It is rarely too hot.

MILITARY: Although they are not a warlike state, Eacharnach is famous for its cavalry, its knights and its horse lords: from the messenger boys, to the rough-riding jesters who perform tricks on horseback for the amusement of their masters.

DOMINANT LANGUAGE: The Common Tongue is spoken everywhere, Elevated Speech is used in court, and the Old Language is used only for religious ceremonies. Northspeech is only used for ancient heritage rituals specific to Eacharnach history, and very few people speak it.

TOPOGRAPHY/CLIMATE MOST COMPARABLE TO: Scandinavia, Ireland and the United Kingdom. Although Eacharnach has plenty of open grasslands for their horsemasters to ride upon, the kingdom is far from flat and is home to many forests, mountains and rocky terrain.

CULTURE IS MOST COMPARABLE TO: Ancient Greece, the European Renaissance and Elizabethian/Jacobean England.

POLITICAL AFFAIRS: Eacharnach has developed an alliance with the kingdom of Foirfich, who will send military help, should Eacharnach ever call for it. It should be noted that that Eacharnach has a strong cavalry and and renowned for their mounted warriors, and they have the River Deamharruin and the ocean surrounding them on all sides. Each year, Eacharnach will host the tournaments and festivals, which draw guests from all of Speirling.

VALUES:

BEAUTY: Eacharnarchians value beauty above all else. Physical beauty for both men and women is seen as vitally important, well into old age. Fitness and hygiene are a part of daily life. Eacharnachians have an obsession with beautiful bodies, and spend much of their time achieving muscles or flawless skin and even dieting. While there is no law against obesity, it is not socially tolerated. Makeup, especially around the eyes, is worn by both men and women in formal occasions. Clothing is colorful and flattering. The beauty of their cities is also important to Eacharnachians, and an architect is considered one of the most respectable professions one can hold. Their cities resemble a fantasy-land version of ancient Greece, ancient Rome, Gondor or Rohan.

ART: Eacharnarchians are obsessed with art. They believe that the immortality of a nation can be achieved through its art, and for this reason, there are many painters, sculptors, architects and writers working in the kingdom. Children are taught to dance, sing and play a musical instrument from a young age, and bards and actors are celebrated during festivals. Museums and libraries are considered national treasures. While magic, technology and science are encouraged, if they don’t result in something pretty, they are not considered important.

HORSEMANSHIP: Eacharnach is an equestrian nation. Every Eacharnachian child is put on a horse’s back and taught to ride from a young age. Horses are everywhere; running wild across the countryside, in stables, in art and songs, and the patron god of their kingdom takes the shape of a horse, and is related to the surrounding bodies of water.

ROMANCE: Eacharnachians believe that lovers are the most romantic when they don’t get to be together, or when they are united after much suffering. It is common for engagements to be long, and for the intended couple to be separated and not allowed any more content than letters. Extra-marital affairs, though damaging and often resulting in the murder of the unfaithful and/or their lover, are considered deeply romantic, and the victim (the cheated upon) is frowned upon for not loving or providing for their partner enough and then for breaking up their love affair, even though this does not make complete sense, when you think about it.

PRACTICALITY: Practicality and logic are not traditionally valued by Eacharnachians. If things are too high concept or ugly, the majority of the Eacharnach public will reject them. For their love of beauty and art, they are a rather shallow people, and do not like to think about reality too deeply, as it oftens ruins the romance of it.

SOME LEGAL MATTERS:

LGBTQ INDIVDUALS: Homosexuals and heterosexuals are treated with equal status. Among other things, Eacharnachians value love and beauty, so they don’t really care about a person’s sexual orientation. They do, however, feel most comfortable categorizing people into neat little slots, so they aren’t totally into transgender or gender-queer individuals, and they don’t understand bisexuality. They would never dream of harming or intentionally offending someone based on their gender or sexual identity.

ETHNICITY AND SPECIES: Eacharnach, being the liberal kingdom that it is, doesn’t have much to say on the skin color or the pointed ears of its inhabitants. They do like to categorize everyone neatly, however, so they are confused, but not hostile, if an individual has ancestors from more than two different backgrounds.

GENDER ROLES: In the eyes of the law, men and women do not have equal status, however, the general attitude of the people is that they should. Women are socially permitted to own property, divorce, inherit property, carry arms, live alone, refuse marriage and run a business, however, they are legally unable to do any of these things, and the law is always on the side of the man, when there is a legal conflict over these matters.

SLAVERY: Slavery is legal, but not for the sake of slavery. People are not enslaved due to their race or ethnicity. Instead, slavery is often a punishment for criminal acts. Indentured servitude as a method of payment is much more common, and is usually for a finite number of years. There are two tattoos used to identify slaves: a three-pointed star identifies a slave who has served their term or is in the process of serving their term, whereas a four-pointed star is used to identify an individual who will be a slave for life. The tattoos are always on the front of the neck, right under the jaw, and it is illegal to cover them with anything (i.e. hair, clothing, makeup, magic). Ex-slaves may regain their rights as citizens, whereas current slaves do not have the right to: marry, divorce, hold or inherit property, run their own businesses or carry arms (unless at the permission or command of their master). Once the sentence of slavery has been served, the new free person will be issued their "freedom papers" from the Eacharneachian government and a court magician will change the color of the three-pointed star tattoo from red to green. Slaves may be bought by Eacharnachian citizens.

MAGIC: The practice of light magic is loosely regulated, but encouraged, and may be used for recreational purposes. The practice of dark magic is frowned upon, but is not illegal.

GAOTHAIDH
Kingdom of Wise

user posted image

THE BASICS:

CAPITOL CITY: Speur-Ghlan

CURRENT MONARCH: King Felix Trilanor

NATIONAL CREST: the common blue sparrow

ECONOMIC STATUS: good

NATIONALLY SEEN AS: Gaothaidhians are seen as the nerds of Speirling. They are often seen as snobby intellectuals who look down upon the rest of the kingdoms because they are more technologically advanced than the rest of Speirling

CLIMATE: Due to the high altitude of most of the kingdom, the air is thin and the weather is cold. Gaothaidh is subjected to the elements just as they come through the Ozone layer. Of course, the major cities have all been magical insolated and there is heating during the winter months in the most highly populated areas.

MILITARY: Gaothaidh does not have a standing military or many individuals with military training. What they do have that sets them about is technology that is unheard of by the other kingdoms. Gaothaidh is home to the most skilled magicians and scientists in Speirling and can unleash their version of bombs upon their enemies. They also have force fields set around their major cities, which are big enough and prepared to house all of their citizens, should the need arise, and they are prepared for a siege. In addition, their airships may be armed with canons and guns should they need to use them for battle.

DOMINANT LANGUAGE: The Common Tongue and the Old Language are both officially recognized as being the language of the government, but there are a multitude of recognized languages and most citizens in Gaothaidh are at least bilingual.

TOPOGRAPHY/CLIMATE MOST COMPARABLE TO: Gaothaidh is the Eastern-most kingdom is built into the mountains. Their climate is most comparable to that of any mountain range or high-altitude place.

CULTURE IS MOST COMPARABLE TO: The Lost City of Atlantis and Steampunk cities. The social environment is very liberal and open and is closest to the culture found in San Francisco, CA, Hawaii and on most liberal and/or research college campuses.

POLITICAL AFFAIRS:
While Gaothaidh cares for its own citizens with the best of care, it is exclusive when welcoming immigrants from the rest of Speirling into their kingdom. They have to import most of their food, but their technological and magical exports will always bring in the trade they need to survive. They keep obsessive records with information on each of their citizens and they have even compiled a record of Speirling’s inhabitants called the Book of Facades. They are also responsible for the Silver Basin, a one-way method on spying on anyone in Speirling. Although feared for their technological, magical and social advancements by the other kingdoms, they are often made fun of behind their backs for their perceived stuffy and superior attitudes, cultured tastes, and obsessive need to study everything in detail.

VALUES:

INTELLIGENCE: Gaothaidhians value intelligence and wit above all else. Stupidity is seen as a debilitating disease. Schooling is free to all Gaothaidhian youth who qualify, but as they get older, students are given tasks and tests of increasing difficulty and if they score too low, their education is discontinued. Only the most intelligent will graduate. The citizens with the most education get the highest-paying and most desirable jobs, while the citizens with no or the least amount of education get the lowest-paying and undesirable jobs, while the average students make up the middle-class. This ensures a socio-economic class system based on intelligence, instead one based on bloodlines.

CONVERSATION: Gaothaidhians are made fun of by the rest of Speirling because of their love of conversation. While those from other kingdoms might enjoy a good duel or a raunchy play, Gaothaidhians would rather stay up all night talking about politics, art and current events. The ability to hold an intelligent conversation is considered vital in Gaothaidhian society, and sparkling wit is a coveted gift.

HARD WORK: Those with innate magical powers are held in high estimate, but if someone born without such gifts works their way to the top, they are given equal status and even more respect. Gaothaidhians believe in not censuring or holding their children back in any way. They allow them to reach their full potential, so as adults, they will make bright new discoveries that will advance their society.

CIVILITY: Gaothaidhians even treat their enemies with respect and hospitality. It is frowned upon to raise one’s voice in anger, especially indoors. Impolite manners are regarded with (well-bred) disgust and profanity in public is fineable by law. It is the belief that if you don’t have anything nice to say, don’t say anything at all, but if you absolutely must say something nasty, you should state it in the most polite way possible.

SOME LEGAL MATTERS:

LGBTQ INDIVDUALS: Heterosexual, homosexual, and polyamorous marriages are recognized by the government and by Gaothaidhian society. Transgender and genderqueer individuals are widely accepted. It is common practice for citizens to register their sexual orientation and gender identity (along with the biological sex) with the government as part of the bi-annual census. The adoption of children, especially to homosexual couples, is a common and widely-accepted practice.

ETHNICITY AND SPECIES: Although the Gaothaidh government requires all citizens to register their species/ethnicity, it is illegal to discriminate against someone because of their heritage.

GENDER ROLES: Men and women are seen as equal and sexism toward either gender, when identified, is punishable by a heavy fine. This holds true for racism and homophobia.

SLAVERY: Is illegal and is punishable by banishment.

MAGIC: The use of magic is encourage for free use by everyone.

FOIRFICH
Kingdom of Warriors

user posted image

THE BASICS:

CAPITOL CITY: Greannta

CURRENT MONARCH: 2 royal stewards are currently governing the kingdom

NATIONAL CREST: a black bull

ECONOMIC STATUS: good (because of the strict laws of Foirfich that resist so much, there is also a flourishing black market)

NATIONALLY SEEN AS: The rest of Speirling generalizes Foirfich has being warlike, powerful, and feared, but heartless and cold. They are seen has being more concerned with brute strength and are not seen as being cultured, intelligent people and it is widely accepted that they have a low standard of living, especially for the lower classes.

CLIMATE: Foirfich is in the central region of Speirling. Winters are harsh and snowy, summers are hot and humid, and spring and autumn are warm/cool and pleasant.
MILITARY: As a kingdom, Foirfich focuses on its military more than anything else. They have an overwhelming number in their infantry, which can be divided into two major sections: legionaries and assassins. Legionaries attend boot camp for a few weeks before they are inducted into the army. Their mortality rate is high, but their numbers are great. Assassins are highly-trained warriors trained for years in the airs of concealment, stealth, survival and of course, combat. Knights are mounted warriors and Foirfich has two legions of dragonriders. War technicians and journalists will often accompany the troops.

DOMINANT LANGUAGE: Foirfich almost exclusively uses the Common Tongue.

TOPOGRAPHY/CLIMATE MOST COMPARABLE TO: The American Midwest. Most of Foirfich is flat planes dotted with trees, lakes and rivers. Much of the residential land is industrialized, fertile land is used for farming and infertile land is used for training grounds and war games.

CULTURE IS MOST COMPARABLE TO: Ancient Sparta or Ancient Rome.

POLITICAL AFFAIRS: Foirfich is an internationally-recognized military powerhouse. Everyone is eager to make alliances with them and no one is stupid enough to mess with them. Because Foirfich is so heavily-focused on warfare, it relies heavily on trade and its main exports are grains or corn, along with swine. As Foirfich is landlocked, it will pay a high price for salt. With few exceptions, the Foirfich government will assign occupations at puberty, often basing their decisions on bloodlines, body type or innate abilities (those born with magical powers are often trained and sent to work for the government “for the good of the state”. Sometimes, the biggest, strongest boys and girls are betrothed to each other during their pre-pubescent years by the government, in hopes of producing even bigger, stronger children. Most young men go into the military or into farming. Women may marry and/or go to work in factories. Public education is provided to both boys and girls in the areas of fighting, although the boys are often far more, and the girls’ public education in fighting is often limited to self-defense. No one is allowed to be idle. All males adult male and female citizens are provided with an allowance of bread year-round, to keep up Foirfich’s boast that “no one starves in Foirfich”. Taxes are very high: about 75% of a citizen’s income is paid to the government in taxes.

VALUES:

STRENGTH: Foirfich values strength. The stronger their individual citizens, their cities, armies and their government is, the better. Emotions or artistic ability are not factors when determining the individual worth of a person. Men and women with large stature, good bone structure and defined, powerful muscles are seen as more attractive than others who lack the above traits, but who might have prettier faces or more graceful bodies.

SURVIVAL OF THE FITTEST: Foirfichians cultivate aggression in children, encouraging them to fight each other for the best food, toys and the affection of their parents. Although home to the best hospital in Speirling, Foirfichians do not believe in treating serious illnesses, injuries that have little hope of healing or infections. At the first sign of a highly contagious disease that could turn into an epidemic, the infected individuals are quarantined and left to die, or they are executed right off, like a farmer would cull sick animals from his herd.

GOOD OF THE WHOLE: Foirfich is far more concerned with surviving as a kingdom and as a people before the individual welfare of its citizens. Their society is not communist, but it is communist-like. Culling the herd is a common metaphor used for the mindset of the Foirfichian people.

HONOR & LOYALTY: Despite their harsh outlook on life, Foirfichians have a strong sense of honor. It is a tall order to find a Foirfichian citizen who will not keep their word and they would rather die than live in disgrace. Respect is another key value, as is the glorifying the state.

SOME LEGAL MATTERS:

LGBTQ INDIVDUALS: Homosexuality, bisexuality, transsexualism, heterosexuality, or other forms of sexual identity or gender expression are not the concern of the state. Regardless of personal preferences, all men and women must have claim to at least one heir. Infertile individuals are subject to the examination of medical/magical professionals of state, and the problem will be attempted to be rectified by those professionals who are qualified. Refusal to procreate by the age of twenty-five or younger results in execution by the state, as it is the belief of Foirfich that the bigger the population, the more powerful the kingdom. The one exception is for the nuns, monks, priests and priestesses working in the temples, as the City of Leac-Iobairt is the holiest city in Speirling.

ETHNICITY AND SPECIES: As long as the people are producing strong offspring, their species or ethnicity is of no importance.

GENDER ROLES: Legally and attitudinally, men are considered superior to women. There are no laws against women serving in the military, but special permits must be obtained for them to own property.

SLAVERY: Is a flourishing and socially-accepted trade.

MAGIC: The use of magic is the sole privilege of the state. Those allowed to use magic must obtain a state-issued license and may only use their powers for state-related business.

TEUMNACH
Kingdom of Fae

user posted image

THE BASICS:

CAPITOL CITY: Gorm-Cheathach

CURRENT MONARCH: King Arandur Gwydion and Queen Consort Sorcha Gwydion

NATIONAL CREST: quartz stag

ECONOMIC STATUS: self-sustaining

NATIONALLY SEEN AS: The Western-most kingdom, this is the kingdom of the fae. Although they can be found across Speirling, this is home base for most fae creatures, especially the sidhe. The rest of Speirling are not particularly worried about aggression from Teumnach, but they’re not stupid enough to provoke its inhabitants. Because of the safety changelings are granted within the boundaries of Teumnach, the entire kingdom has been given the stigma of stealing human babies.

CLIMATE: Teumnach is the mildest of all the kingdoms. The weather conform to the seasons they are assigned to and it never gets too hot or too cold. If it snows during the winter, the result is a light and fluffy winter wonderland that melts before it can become dirty. Most of Teumnach is covered by forests and it is bordered, to the east, by the River Deamhuarriun.

MILITARY: Teumnach’s army is comprised entirely of volunteers and once trained, warriors are left to go about their lives, and are only gathered when there is a need to import vital information that could not be sent by way of magic or a physical messenger. Swordsmen and archers make up the bulk of the army, but almost every warrior in the Teumnachian army will be using magic, should they ever go into battle, and this is something that Teumnach feels quite smug about.

DOMINANT LANGUAGE: The Old Language is spoken by most respectable people, but most also speak the Common Tongue.

TOPOGRAPHY/CLIMATE MOST COMPARABLE TO: Teumnach is a land maintained by magic (and bordered by the River Deamhuarruin) and is unlike the rest of Speirling. It can be compared to the rural Japan. The climate is comparable to Oregon or Northern California.

CULTURE IS MOST COMPARABLE TO: Narnia

POLITICAL AFFAIRS: Teumnach claims to mind its own business and allow the other kingdoms to mind theirs, but that is not entirely the case. When Teumnach feels threatened (often by the activities of mortals or the undead), then it is known for passive aggressively sneaking into the inner workings of whatever is bothering them and magically tampering with the plans of other people to affect the results in Teumnach’s interest. They are known for being a proud kingdom, and while the rest of Speirling has interests in remaining sensitive to Teumnach’s proud and ancient history, by no means does anyone want to give Teumnach the idea that they are easily pushed around, and the leaders of Teumnach know this. Meanwhile, in Teumnach itself, the law and the common attitude are that people are allowed to “live and let live”, but even at home, Teumnachians are an insecure and easily threatened people known for taking preventative measures towards anyone seen to be a threat.

VALUES:

OUTSIDE SOCIETY: Although Teumnach has its own culture that has been developed over thousands of years, Teumnachians treasure that they are unregulated and free. They encourage their people to run with nature, become a little feral, and otherwise become one with the natural world. Because of the magic hat maintains their beautiful land, it is quite common to go barefoot, except if it snows.

NATURE: Along with magic, Teumnachians treasure and protect the natural world. It is possible to whisper to the trees of the forest or see the spirit of the River Deamhuarruin in the running waters. Teumnach is home to many talking animals, which are rare in the rest of Speirling. Although they are able to magically control it, many Teumnachians harbor a fear of wildfires because of their destructive properties. Even more than wildfires, they fear the industrial developments of humankind and fiercely protect wild places.

PEACE: Although they may be cold to newcomers and new ideas at first, Teumnachians are a peaceful people and rarely throw people in dungeons or execute prisoners. In order to maintain this peace, Teumnachian warriors are set to guard “Kinn’ilhn”, or as it is known in the Common Tongue, “the Bridge”, a magic-enforced bridge across the River Deamhuarruin. The river itself has been enchanted so that no one may cross into Teumnach without the knowledge and consent of its people.

CONSERVATIVE: Teumnach is the kingdom that is least progressive. As the fae have been around since the dawn of time it follows, logically, that they would be very interested in preserving their heritage. And being the closet control freaks that they are, they feel the need to conserve certain aspects beyond their kingdom as well. They are a people who see change as a bad thing: as something that is upsetting thousands of years with a system that has worked and been cherished.

SOME LEGAL MATTERS:

LGBTQ INDIVDUALS: Pansexuality is the strong preference of the people of Teumnach. Most Teumnachians do not understand why heterosexuals and homosexuals would want to cut off half of the people around because of their gender. And gender lines are a little blurred. Teumnachians are permitted to identify as male or female without being harassed, but most Teumnachian children are taught at birth to exist outside the gender binary or to blur the lines of gender.

ETHNICITY AND SPECIES: Sidhe are valued as the eldest and most powerful of beings, and thus are given priority over everyone else. Unicorns and centaurs are next in line, and are followed by the “lesser fae”: changelings, banshees, elves, nymphs, satyrs, goblins, dwarves, kelpies and sprites. Lycanthropes and the undead are regarded as one who has not bathed for a stretch of time is regarded, humans are not taken seriously and demi-gods are viewed as tattle-tale children. Hybrids are not frowned upon for being hybrids: it all depends on what the makeup of their hybrid blood is.

GENDER ROLES: Men, women and those who have yet to make up their minds are treated equally, legally and attitudinally. In fact, Teumnachians prefer to blur the lines of gender. It is impossible to make anyone marry against their will.

SLAVERY: Is completely unacceptable under any circumstances.

MAGIC: Is encouraged for free and unregulated use. In fact, if one is not using magic, it is suspicious.

MUIREACH
Kingdom of Merchants and Pirates

user posted image

THE BASICS:

CAPITOL CITY: Port Seang

CURRENT MONARCH: Queen Sloane Samara and King Consort Drest Samara

NATIONAL CREST: navy-and-white albatross

ECONOMIC STATUS: excellent: Muireach is the wealthiest of all the kingdoms
NATIONALLY SEEN AS: Muireachians are known for being wealthy traders and merchants, but they also the scapegoats for anything foreign, such as diseases, troublesome new species, or ideas making their way into Speirling. Port Seang is recognized internationally and most foreigners make their way into Speirling through it. They also known for their loose morals, their strong ales, their lively taverns, and their many prostitutes. Muireach is also notorious for its large population of pirates and while piracy is illegal, it is rarely enforced, because of a combination of wealthy pirates bribing the corrupt constables and the number of pirates in Muireach being so high that the kingdom would go bankrupt with imprisoning them and extinct executing them.

CLIMATE: Muireach is pleasant, due to its coastal location. It may get warm in the summer, but the sea breeze keeps everything tolerable and in the winter it keeps everything at a modest temper. This being said, Muireach’s territory is most water, and what little landmass they have is at the mercy of the sea. Their lands have been flooded and their way of life as they know it has been destroyed in the past, and they have always rebuilt.

MILITARY: Although the other kingdoms may possess ships, Muireach controls the seas, both with trade and with its navy. Muireach keeps a standing army, but every male Muireach citizen is in the navel reserve, so in times of war, Muireach will be able to dominate all naval battles.

DOMINANT LANGUAGE: The Common Tongue, but many unknown languages are spoken in the streets by the many foreign merchants who make their way to Port Seang.

TOPOGRAPHY/CLIMATE MOST COMPARABLE TO: Central and South America. The little untamed they land they have is most comparable to the jungles of South America.

CULTURE IS MOST COMPARABLE TO: In general, what you see in Disney’s Pirates of the Caribbean, but without the presence of the British.

POLITICAL AFFAIRS: No one wants to turn Muireach against them, and with good reason. They have complete control of the oceans, and thus, the upper hand in war and in trade. They don’t have much land, and what little they have is covered by thick, humid jungles and legend has it that they are inhabited by witch doctors and cannibalistic societies. As a general rule, the other kingdoms of Speirling leave Muireach to do its business in peace and offer whatever help it requests. When matters become tense and war is looming, each Speirling kingdom scrambles to make an alliance with Muireach because of its navy. Within their own kingdom, each adult male of Muireach is in the naval reserve, and receives training in some aspect of nautical warfare. He is then allowed to go on with his life, though he is brought back to the Port Seang annually to refresh his training. Women are not required to be in the naval reserve, but are free to volunteer. It is the opinion of some seamen that women bring bad luck on ships. There is no law that supports this, but there is also no law protecting women from discrimination, either, so a woman’s position on (or off) a battleship is left up to the captain. Some women have solved this problem by transferring to a captain who treats men and women with equality and eventually came to captain their own ships.

VALUES:

BUSINESS: Muireach is the kingdom that flourishes economically, due mostly to its location, but also because of the attitude and the lifestyle its people has adopted to suit this. Vendors are lined up from the first sign of land all the way to the mouth of the jungle. Children are taught to sell the toys of other children right out from under their noses and to pickpocket each other. If money was made, it is considered a good day for a Muireachian, and they are known to brag to each other on the most creative ways of swindling people in the evenings in the taverns.

PARTYING: If the day is for business, the night is for a good time. As previously mentioned, Muireachians usually have loose morals. Married men and women have been known to have extramarital affairs with other people or prostitutes—sometimes with each other’s consent and knowledge. Drinking is the most common activity after swindling. Thievery, pickpocketing, gambling and whoring are all common practices and although there are laws against some of all kinds of thievery, it and the other activities are practiced freely and openly and never enforced. After pirates and merchants, musicians and tavern owners are the most common occupations for people in Miureach.

THE SPREAD OF IDEAS: Other kingdoms might have interests in preserving their traditions, but Muireachians hold a national curiosity for the foods, clothing, customs, languages, goods, and people from other lands. They believe that ideas will help them improve their own world and do not shy away from the new and unusual. Instead, they embrace it. They’re not terribly concerned with offending people by stealing their customs, in fact, they’re not offended by much (or maybe they’re all perpetually drunk).

SEXUALLY FREE: Muireach is the most sexually liberated of all the kingdoms. Prostitution is legal and not frowned upon. Indeed, prostitution is an acceptable career for both women and men, although the “more expensive” the prostitute, the greater respect they achieve. Virgin brides is not a concept embraced by Muireachians, and it is common for boys and girls to lose their virginity before they are married. Married and unmarried couples have open relationships or even polyamorous relationships. Sex, business and a good time are all considered important parts of life, and sometimes, they intermingle.

SOME LEGAL MATTERS:

LGBTQ INDIVDUALS: No one cares as long as you can pay your drink bill.

ETHNICITY AND SPECIES: See above. Unusual species or specimens will be met with curiosity and often prodded with questions that would be considered inappropriate in other cultures.

GENDER ROLES: There are no laws discriminating against or protecting women from discrimination, and the level of their participation in business and war is usually left up to that of their superiors. They do have the free will to choose their superiors, however, and so many women choose to work or fight for female superiors. All able-bodied men are expected to serve in the naval reserve.

SLAVERY: Is a flourishing business.

MAGIC: Is unregulated and freely used.

SGAITHTE
Kingdom of Dragonriders

user posted image

THE BASICS:

CAPITOL CITY: City of Bairinn

CURRENT MONARCH: King Edmund Dumos

NATIONAL CREST: red dragon

ECONOMIC STATUS: below ideal – while not bankrupt, Sgaithte is experiencing some financial difficulties, at present.

NATIONALLY SEEN AS: Sgaithte are seen are the strict, proper and conservative grandparents of Speirling. They are concerned with social propriety and the “right and wrong” and “good and evil” way of doing things.

CLIMATE: The Southern kingdom of Sgaithte is a mountainous desert. Most of the year, the soil is dry, supporting only cacti and golden wild grasses. Few trees grow out of the dry soil and rocks and fires rage through the land, year-round. During the winter, the weather is pleasant and once in a great while, it might even rain. The land is mostly comprised of mountains, caves and very little flat land that leads to the Southern ocean.

MILITARY: Sgaithte is known for its airforce of dragonriders. Unlike other kingdoms, only the very finest of young men are selected to learn to become dragonriders, and they are taught not only to fight with swords, bows and arrows, slingshots, chains and maces, etc, but they are taught how to control their beasts, which are trained to breathe fire on command. Other men deemed “less worthy” will enter Sgaithte’s infantry or minimal cavalry. The few horses that Sgaithte owns are finely-boned, hardy beasts, bred for the desert (rather like Arabian horses). These horses are either primarily used for war or dragon food, much to the displeasure of Eacharnachian visitors. Sgaithte has two ships.

DOMINANT LANGUAGE: The Common Tongue, and Sgaithteian, a language close to the Common Tongue, but unique to Sgaithte.

TOPOGRAPHY/CLIMATE MOST COMPARABLE TO: California, Texas, Mexico, Colorado, Utah, Arizona, and Greece.

CULTURE IS MOST COMPARABLE TO: Regency England. Very socially conservative and civilized.

POLITICAL AFFAIRS: Dragon and dragonrider training is a very secretive business, and most of it is done in caves and the workers are sworn to secrecy. Sgaithte’s government is a tight one, and keeps tabs on all the dragons they know to exist in their studbook. While dragon-rearing is a nasty business, real life is a civilized affair. All free men are granted rights as citizens, but are expected to stay within their caste. Men are the only ones permitted in the Sgaithteian Airforce and other military affairs, and women are expected to be obedient wives, mothers, and daughters. Just because this is the law in Sgaithte doesn’t mean that it is always followed, and people have been known to steal dragon eggs and raise the dragons in secret.

VALUES:

PROPRIETY: Sgaithte is home to a people who are concerned with public behavioral displays, with good morals, polished manners, and of course, attention to religion. Sgaithte is the oldest of the seven kingdoms and that is a badge they wear with pride. Duty is very important to the Sgaithte people, whereas individual goals are not. Forced marriages are common here. Crying, screaming and otherwise “making a scene” in public are heavily frowned upon, and families are regularly shamed by the inappropriate actions of their relatives.

SUCCESS & FAMILY: Sgaithteians have a defined sense of what it means to be successful in life, and it is expected for all respectable citizens to become successful. A respective marriage to yield respectable offspring is encouraged, of course, as well as owning a home, but what really defines success is the accumulative of finances, material possessions and power. Ideally, a successful man should advance his station in life beyond that of what his father had, while not breaking out of his caste. Women are expected to do the same thing, but with marriage. On a related note, the family is considered the cornerstone of Sgaithteian society, and you are tied to your family for life and can bring them fortune or shame.

TRADITION: Like Teumnach, Sgaithte is a very old kingdom with its many traditions and customs. Holidays are strictly observed and religion is practiced daily. Traditional dress is worn and fashions do not normally stray from what people have always worn. Throughout Speirling, clothing is dictated by the occupation of the wearer, but in Sgaithte, clothing also serves to brand the wearer to his or her occupation to such an extent that the billowing dark red robes of the dragonrider knights have become famous throughout Speirling

CASTE SYSTEM: As previously mentioned, Sgaithte runs on a caste system to which it sticks like magically enforced glue. It is unusual for someone to break out of their caste, and in the event that they do, they are simultaneously celebrated and shamed for it. It will take several generations of their descendants maintaining this caste before they are accepted into it fully. The castes include, from bottom to top: slaves, farmers/serfs, servants, common soldiers, merchants/artisans, dragonrider knights, clergy, nobility and royalty. Of course, there are sub-divisions within the castes. Sgaithte utilizes the guild system.

SOME LEGAL MATTERS:

LGBTQ INDIVDUALS: Homosexuality, bisexuality and transsexualism is punishable by imprisonment and/or death. Relationships must be strictly monogamous and asexuality is not recognized as legitimate.

ETHNICITY AND SPECIES: Preference is given to humans and fae are seen as a threat, but lesser fae will sometimes be employed as royal or military servants. Ethnicity within the human race is NOT cause for discrimination.

GENDER ROLES: Men are legally and attitudinally seen as superior to women. Women are legally allowed to work and a few even own property, but there are very few laws to protect even these rights.

SLAVERY: Is acceptable and practiced.

MAGIC: Is illegal for civilian use and is regulated by the government.

RIASGLACH
Kingdom of Barbarians

user posted image

THE BASICS:

CAPITOL CITY: Village of Scoundrels (Cedric Dractwood), one of the swamps (Roman Dracarys)

CURRENT MONARCH(S): Cedric Dractwood (self-proclaimed king), and his followers "The Village People" and Roman Dracarys (proclaimed High King by his followers known as "The Fellowship")

NATIONAL CREST: TBA

ECONOMIC STATUS: poverty-stricken

NATIONALLY SEEN AS: The rest of Speirling is embarrassed by their own failure to keep these people contained. They are seen as barbarians and criminals. Until recently, Riasglach was a sophisticated prison for anyone who had done wrong in Speirling. The Gate of Dionch was enchanted to keep the prisoners inside, and guarded, day and night. Legend has it that Peregrine Alexander, the allegedly dead traitor prince of Eacharnach and a fae hybrid woman escaped and wrecked chaos on the guards. Since then, a series of unfortunate ailments have befallen the guards. They were picked off one by the one, and the enchantments on the Gate of Dionach were removed, freeing the prisoners of Riasglach. Some chose to make the journey back to their homelands, but most stayed, knowing that they would only be captured and possibly executed in their homelands.

CLIMATE: Located on the Southern-most tip of Speirling, Riasglach is the smallest of the seven kingdoms and it is mostly covered by dense marshes and jungle. It is humid most of the time and the swamps are dangerous to navigate.

MILITARY: Riasglach has no organized military, although many of its people are accomplished fighters.

DOMINANT LANGUAGE: The Common Tongue

TOPOGRAPHY/CLIMATE MOST COMPARABLE TO: The swamps of the Indian Subcontinent and the swamps found alongside the Mississippi River.

CULTURE IS MOST COMPARABLE TO: Think of a mix between the barbarian tribes that attacked to Ancient Roman Empire, only all in one place, akin to Australia in the 1800’s.

POLITICAL AFFAIRS: Riasglach has no centralized government. It is not technically a kingdom, as it does not have a king, and if it does have a king, that king would be chaos. Many may rise up against each other claiming to be king.

VALUES:

Chaos reigns in Riasglach. Until recently, it was a prison colony, but now it is a free, divided “nation”, for lack of a better word. Most people live in camps with convicts who share similar ideals. Some live alone. There are all manner of nasty things taking place.

SOME LEGAL MATTERS:

As stated above, there is no organized government here, only chaos and the determination to survive.
