Phoenix

Two hundred years after the gods had finished (and failed) at cleaning up the mess involving dragons left behind by Leaslinte (god of Horizons), Ghrian (god of the sun), decided that he too wanted to create a fantastical creature – one to rival that of Lealinte's dragons.

He created the Phoenix.

Granting the birds immortal life, carrying the fire of the sun within their orange-red bodies, and possessing the ability to heal any injury sustained to their bodies with the very same flames. He took it further still; if an injury was too great, the phoenix would die, its body dissolving into ash, before the bird would be, quite literally, reborn from the ashes of its former existence.

Ghrian was pleased with his work. But something troubled him. If he released these fiery birds into the world of mortal men and fae... how long before they caused problems, like they had with the dragons. It had taken centuries for the gods to fix that mess, and they were unable to fix it completely anyway. He did not want to face the same consequences as Leaslinte.

The god sat and pondered how to avoid such an eventuality. It was his wife, Gealach (goddess of the moon) that came up with the solution. No two phoenixes could come in close proximity to each other, otherwise they would die a permanent death. Grateful to her genius, Ghrian allowed Gealach to create her own version of the phoenix: the exact opposite of his own fiery version.

Gealach's phoenixes were white in colour, shining brightly like the moon that she ruled over. Tiny sparkles of light even fell from their wings as they flew, and when they died their bodies would dissolve into a shimmering stardust before they too are reborn.

And thus the Sun Phoenix and the Moon Phoenix came into existence.

Sun Phoenix
A danger to any forested areas, the Sun Phoenix was created by the sun god Ghrian himself. They are said to carry the suns fire itself and to attack one of these god-created birds will bring the wrath of the sun god upon you.

Color: Their bodies are shaded a rich mixture of red and orange. It is not uncommon to see a sun phoenix with markings that resemble that of burning flames. Yellow can also be found on the very outer feathers of their wings.

Defining trait: Small sparks of fire can be witnessed falling from the feathers of a Sun Phoenix whenever the bird flaps their wings. These sparks can also be used to set any grassy area on fire (either intentionally or by accident).

Diet: Sun Phoenixes are birds of prey. They will hunt for lizards, snakes and rodents hiding within the rocky landscape that they make their home. The larger the phoenix, the large the prey that they can take down.

Temperament: Sun Phoenixes can be quite 'hot headed'. They are highly emotional birds, and can be quite aggressive. Taming a Sun Phoenix will take time and perseverance, as they will not trust you one ounce to begin with. Just getting near one will result in angry screeching, and flapping of fiery wings - a visible thread to 'get back'. However, these birds also admire determination and you will eventually be granted enough trust to get close. From there, the sky is the limit.

Habitat: Found in rocky locations where there is not much plant life. Typically in hot arid places, such as the desert and volcanoes of Sgaithte. Though some can be found in Steppes of Allta of Foirfich.

Moon Phoenix
The sight of a Moon Phoenix is said to be a blessing. They were made by Gealach, with the beauty and mystery of the moon in mind. The goddess is quite protective of her birds, but it is not her wrath you will face for harming them - it is that of her husband, the sun god Ghrian.

Color: A Moon Phoenix is white in colour, with pale silver feathers mixed into their wings. Pale blue markings around their eyes are also common, though not all possess such markings.

Defining trait: Whenever a Moon Phoenix flies or flaps their wings, small twinkling lights of starlight can be seen falling from their wings, and even trailing from their long tail feathers. Some Moon Phoenixes are seen to have an almost ethereal glow to their bodies.

Diet: Moon Phoenixes have a combination diet of vegetarian and insectivore. They prefer to eat seeds and grains, small fruits, and insects such as moths, grasshoppers, and cicadas.

Temperament: Though cautious, a Moon Phoenix is far more readily trusting compared to a Sun Phoenix. They possess a gentler nature, and a sense of curiosity. They are especially gentle towards young children. That being said, the moment that a Moon Phoenix feels threatened or betrayed (even by people that have befriended them), they will fly away and never return.

Habitat: Unlike their sun counterparts, Moon Phoenixes have a preference for colder climates. They can typically be seen around the bases of the snow covered mountain ranges to the north of Eacharnach and Gaothaidh, but it not uncommon to see them in the snowy regions as well. Moon Phoenixes also make their home in Teumnach.

Size:
  • Young - The smallest of the phoenixes, comparable in size to a Macaw parrot (3.3 feet from the head to the tip of the tail feathers). The term 'young' is abit of a misnomer; while it can refer to the youngest of the phoenixes, there are birds that are hundreds of years old that fit into this range.
  • Mature - The midrange of the phoenix birds in terms of size. Averaging around 8 feet in length from head to tip of the tail. Much like the 'young' size classification, the term 'mature' is a misnomer as phoenixes that are only around 10 years old can be classed as 'mature' in terms of size; but most often this range is used to class phoenix birds that are hundreds of years old.
  • Titan - The titans are the oldest and largest of the Phoenixes. In terms of size, they are around 12 feet from the head to the tip of the tail feathers in length. There are only four in the world: two Sun Phoenixes and two Moon Phoenixes.
Reproduction: You will never find two phoenixes nesting together. You will not even find one sitting on a nest with an egg. No, getting in close proximity to one another, regardless of whether the other is a Sun or Moon phoenix means instant death for these birds. The only way for a new phoenix to enter the world is for Ghrian or Gealach to create one.
