It wasn't the strong agreement that Peregrine had wanted to hear. Paloma knew that all too well, but it was the best she could do, considering the weight of guilt that be on her shoulders. The decision behind that single word was already weighing upon her...

Peregrine had no idea what she was capable of any more. He hadn't for years. Even while their father had been alive, it didn't seem that any of her brothers had even the slightest inkling of knowledge that she was able to defend herself. Paloma knew how to handle a bow and arrows, and twin swords. She was not a helpless little damsel, though she preferred greatly to avoid situations where she needed to fight her way out. It was for that reason alone that the princess had suggested using the back door.

No, Paloma had never been to this tavern before. But all taverns had a back door. After all, Brocair was a known hunting ground for thieves and assassins alike. Just being here was dangerous enough.

Not caring about the state of her dress, Paloma slunk out of her chair and onto the floor, crawling across the ground to crouch behind the bar. Though the barman gave a questioning look between the two people hiding behind his bar, and the guards, the man said not a word. He merely carried on with his work, wiping a tankard with a cloth that he pulled out from being tucked into his belt, acting as if nothing was amiss. The man's behaviour made Paloma wonder for a moment... how often did he have people sneaking out the back door?

Passing her brother, Paloma made a crouched run for the door, keeping herself low, and hopefully out of sight of the guards. Reaching the door, Paloma looked back to see if her brother was following. No matter how different they might have been, he was still her brother – she needed to know that he was safe.
“Come on!” she mouthed the words at him silently as she opened the door... right before a pair of hands grabbed her, pulling her out into the alley. The hood of her cloak was ripped from her head, revealing her face... to some shocked gasps of the men that had grabbed her.
“It's the princess...” one of them stated the obvious in disbelief.

Paloma looked around... she hadn't even screamed, though she was deathly afraid now. By the gods! It wasn't just the five guards inside... there were another five here in the alley.
“What on earth is she doing in Brocair at this hour?”
“Let me go!” Paloma commanded, shaking off the hands that held her, though most of the men just laughed. Gods help them... Peregrine was better off hiding at this point! It was at that point that two hooded figures dressed in brown and green, flipped off the roofs and down into the alleyway. If it was the advantage of shock that they were after... they had it.

The guards were scrambling to draw weapons.

One of the younger guards grabbed Paloma's wrist, pulling her away from the others and pushing her behind him, his weapon already drawn. The only difference was... this guard wasn't glaring at the hooded intruders, but rather at the other guards!

We're men, we're men in tights! We're butch!

He said nothing else on the subject, even though he felt he had made his feelings on hiding abundantly clear. Had it been up to him, he would have rushed Pandion's guards and probably managed to kill plenty of them before he would have been forced to give up in and flee in a spectacular and destructive manner. But now Paloma was involved. Paloma didn't live outside. Paloma didn't chase down the king's riders on a regular basis and launch a series of unsuccessful “raids” in an attempt to take back a crown that had never been on her head. In other words, Peregrine didn't see his sister was fragile, exactly, but as not being “used” to his pastimes.

He looked up in time to make eye contact with the barkeep. He engaged his lips in a terse sort of smile and nodded his head. The barkeep understood – it was the sort of greeting that men gave to each other when they didn't want to say hello and had nothing of substance to say anyway, but were forced to acknowledge each other. He didn't have to sit awkwardly next to the barkeep for long, for Paloma had opened the back door and was silently calling for him. He was on the move at once, using his elbows to pull himself along, his feet and knees taking up the slack. He moved at a surprising pace, given that he was wriggling around like a snake.

That was the point where it went to hell.

It didn't take a genius to see that Paloma had been snatched from outside the door, but Peregrine was used to sneaking and avoiding being snatched – the sort of activities that the paranoid among his camp sought out – so, him. He had rolled through the open door and was back on his feet in an instant, drawing his dirk out from the top of his boot and sinking it into the leg of the closest soldier and the man fell with a cry. Eyes wild and weapon flashing in the moonlight. He had heard someone mutter something about the princess and his weapon came to meet the speaker in the throat and the man fell without a word.

By then, the assembled thug had come to realize that there was a member of their company who wasn't one of them and he had killed one of them and wounded another before they had the presence of mind to circle him, weapons drawn and pointing at him. In all the kafuffle, Peregrine's hood had come off his face, too, but his feathers were splattered with mud and dirt, he was moving at speed, and his long, unruly hair would cover his recognizable features at any given time. Besides, his was a face less frequently seen at court than the princess'. He didn't know if they would recognize him and if they did, he didn't much care. He had become an urban legend, anyway.

The men circled him and his dirk remained out and at the ready, but his eyes were fixed on one man – the one who held his sister. He stared him down, raising his weapon at him and when he spoke, it was slowly and clearly.

“Put. Her. Down.”

“Put. Her. Down.”

Though the words were spoken clearly, and with a calm voice, Paloma was almost certain that her brother had been on the border of growling the words. Threatened as he was, the guard that held her wrist did not back down, remaining steadfast, with his sword drawn and raised before him.

The princess was uncertain of what surprised her more. The appearance of what she assumed to be two rebels that had flipped off the rooftops, or the dangerous sense of calm that she had heard in Peregrine's voice. He had always been a tad 'flighty', so hearing her brother sound so... low-key was somewhat shocking.

One of the hooded rooftop rebels moved closer to Peregrine, their own weapon raised.
"Captain", the voice sounded rather feminine at that, though they spoke in rather hushed... and hurried tone. "He's one of ours. Robin Bly is on our side... he's been spying for us".
The two rebels that had almost thrown themselves from the roofs spun on the spot as extra guards rushed into the alley from all sides. The sound of drawn steel could be heard in all directions. The guard that held Paloma by the wrist could do little more than back up and place her between himself and a wall.
"Let go of me!" Paloma insisted, trying to shake the man's grasp from her arm. She'd run for her life if she had to, but she desperately wanted out of this alleyway.

Her efforts to shake off her guard (quite literally) became increasingly insistent the closer that the reinforcements approached, and more desperate in her actions when a fast-moving guard rushed her brother. With a surge of adrenaline fuelled strength, Paloma removed the hand from her wrist and wretched the sword of the turncoat's grasp, rushing forward to block the strike of a sword aimed at her brother. The princess grunted at the effort, struggling to force the man backwards.

Fortunately for her, she was not forced to end his life as Robin ran forward and thrust a dagger into his former comrades' eye, killing him in an instant. Paloma stood there dazed for a moment, looking at the man that now lay dead at her feet. Robin gently extracted the sword from her grasp, swapping his dagger into her hand. The turncoat nodded in greeting to Peregrine.
"Captain".
Why did everyone keep calling her brother 'Captain'? Did none of the rebels address him as prince when they were in the city?
"Glad to finally meet you. Though I think there are more pressing matters to attend to..." Robin commented with some urgency, though there was the slightest hint of a laugh behind his voice.

We're men, we're men in tights! We're butch!

When the man in question did not release her, he ground his teeth and gripped the hilt of his sword so hard that his knuckles shone in the moonlight. He could see Paloma struggling and it was all he could do to keep his feet on the ground and his wits about him. Had he been younger, he would have made a run for her, but experience had made him a wiser man. He had seen too many skirmishes downhill because of bad decisions and by that he meant his bad decisions. As much as he would have loved to have bashed their faces in, he was going to content himself with talking through this one.

The voice could have been the leaves shaking in the trees on a snake making his way through the brush, but Peregrine heard a whispered name in his ear and perked up. He didn't recognize it, but that was beside the point. Names should never be uttered during a skirmish and having a name was as good as having the person. He had expected to hear something along the lines of, “in the name of the king!” and he had to admit, it was refreshing to not have to put up with such a phrase. Still, the introduction of this Robin Bly puzzled him, but there was no time for that now.

Paloma had wrenched herself free and was hurtling toward another soldier. Peregrine whirled around to see a giant of a man above him – at least half a foot taller than he was – bringing his sword down on him. He reacted by raising his dirk and shoving it into the man's stomach, but he knew he was going to pay a heavy price for his wandering thoughts. There was no escaping the enemy's sword, but even as he stood there, bracing himself to feel the weapon pierce his flesh, nothing happened. He looked up to see the big man falling, a knife embedded in his eye.

He stared at the giant man's killer like a feral horse eyeing a humanoid. He had just killed for him, but that was a classic move when it came to gaining someone else's trust and Peregrine was not falling for it for a minute. The other thing was that she called him “Captain”, a title he to which he had never answered to.

He moved to Paloma – now mercifully free – situating his body so that it was subtly between her and this Robin Bly person and eyed him. He decided not to correct either of them on his rank and simply go with it. His face fluttered in the breeze on wanted posters throughout the kingdom and the stories about him had been around for so long that his likeness may have very well been expanded into tall tails. Then there was the matter that he didn't look all that unusual – there were plenty of men with long dark hair, of his build and countenance. Perhaps Robin Bly was mistaking him for someone else. He liked that. He spent a good portion of his time coming up with disguises and backstories for him and this person had done all the work for him.

“Thanks for...” He jerked his head in the direction of the dead man. “Now, I daresay we should take cover before more of them show up.” He was keeping it vague for now as he had no idea what this “captain” did or sounded like.
